Guy Ritchie Secures Approval for Family Burial Plot at Historic Wiltshire Estate

Film director Guy Ritchie and wife Jacqui Ainsley have received permission to create a private burial plot at their Wiltshire estate, Ashcombe House. The carefully designed site aims to strengthen the family's connection to the historic property.

Guy Ritchie, the renowned British film director, and his wife Jacqui Ainsley have successfully obtained approval to establish a private burial plot at their Wiltshire estate, Ashcombe House. The decision, announced by Wiltshire Council, marks a significant development for the couple's connection to their historic property.

The burial site, initially proposed in March 2024, underwent a relocation process to address concerns raised by Historic England regarding its visual impact on nearby ancient monuments. The revised location, situated on a hillside overlooking the estate, has been deemed more suitable for the landscape.

Ashcombe House, a Grade II listed building dating back to the early 18th century, has a rich history. Once home to Cecil Beaton, the celebrated British photographer and designer, the property was acquired by Ritchie in 2001 during his marriage to Madonna. Following their separation in 2008, Ritchie retained ownership of the estate as part of the divorce settlement.

The approved burial plot will feature walls constructed from local flint and greenstone, materials traditionally used in Wiltshire architecture. Blacksmith-made gates will complete the enclosure, ensuring a design that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.

Wiltshire, known for its prehistoric monuments such as Stonehenge and Avebury, boasts a landscape rich in archaeological significance. The area around Ashcombe House contains evidence of Iron Age and Romano-British settlements, including cross dykes and earthworks dating back to the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age.

The planning process involved careful consideration of the site's historical and environmental context. Wiltshire Council's conservation officer confirmed that the burial plot's location would not adversely impact Ashcombe House or its associated structures. The council described the proposal as "low level and sympathetically constructed for such a setting."

Ritchie, aged 56, and Ainsley, 42, have been together since 2010 and have three children: Rafael, Rivka, and Levi. The couple frequently shares glimpses of their family life at Ashcombe House on Instagram, highlighting their deep connection to the estate.

The approval of this private burial ground represents more than just a practical decision for the Ritchie family. As stated by their agent, TFH Reeves, "This is not intended to make a statement in the landscape but cement the family's tie to the land." This sentiment reflects a growing trend of individuals seeking to establish lasting connections to their properties through private burial arrangements.

Guy Ritchie, known for directing crime films and action comedies such as "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch," has found a unique way to intertwine his personal legacy with the rich history of Wiltshire. As the Romano-British period (43-410 AD) left its mark on this land centuries ago, the Ritchie family now adds its own chapter to the ongoing story of Ashcombe House and its surroundings.
